An initiative to enhance the quality of life in the Winnebago community is now a reality. The Ho-Chunk Village Farmers Market opened in July.
Ho-Chunk, Inc., the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska and partners worked to create the farmers market.
The mission includes promoting tribal food sustainability and food sovereignty, increasing access to fresh food and revitalizing traditional practices in art and agriculture.
The project was largely funded by grants, including USDA Rural Business Development, USDA Food and Nutrition, Kiewit Foundation and WellCare Health Plans, as well as New Markets Tax Credits.
The farmers market is located in a newly finished 4,644-square-foot pavilion called Village Market.
The facility includes a covered outdoor space for numerous vendors and an indoor space with classrooms, a test kitchen, and offices. It’s located in the Ho-Chunk Village, a mixed-use commercial and residential development in Winnebago.
The Ag Extension Program at Little Priest Tribal College now has offices in the building. Partners also include the nonprofit Ho-Chunk Community Development Corporation, Ho-Chunk, Inc. and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.
The market’s name in the Ho-Chunk language is Nį̄šoc Wahāgi Hoci, which translates to “Harvest House.”
